Match the tool to the people who will use it. Linear is built for software teams running issues and cycles alongside GitHub or GitLab. Asana, monday.com and ClickUp are general-purpose tools for marketing, operations and cross-functional work, with ClickUp the most customisable and the slowest to learn. Trello is the simplest: boards and cards that make sense within minutes.
Pick the view before the brand. Boards suit work that moves through stages, lists and timelines suit projects with deadlines and dependencies, and sprints suit engineering. Most tools offer several views, but some sit on paid plans — Trello's timeline and calendar views need its Premium plan.
Read the seat rules as well as the seat price. monday.com's paid plans start at three seats and Asana sells seats in bundles, so a small team can end up paying for seats it does not use.
