Overview

GitHub is the largest hosting service for Git repositories and the default home for open-source software. Beyond version control it bundles pull requests with code review, issue tracking, Projects boards, wikis, GitHub Pages static hosting, package hosting and GitHub Actions for CI/CD. GitHub Copilot, sold as an add-on, provides code completion, chat and a coding agent that can open pull requests from assigned issues.

It is used by individual developers, startups and most large engineering organizations, and its API, webhooks and Marketplace make it the integration hub for the rest of the developer toolchain. Owned by Microsoft since 2018, it also offers a self-hosted GitHub Enterprise Server for organizations that cannot use the cloud service.

The Free plan includes unlimited public and private repositories, 2,000 Actions minutes per month for private repositories and a limited Copilot Free tier. Team costs $4 per user per month and adds protected branches, required reviewers and 3,000 Actions minutes; Enterprise is $21 per user per month with SAML SSO, audit log streaming and 50,000 minutes. Copilot Pro is $10 per month for individuals and Copilot Business $19 per user per month. Actions minutes and storage beyond the included amounts are billed separately.
