Overview
GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant, available inside Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Xcode, Eclipse, the GitHub website and the GitHub Mobile app. It started as inline code completion and now also offers chat, an agent mode that edits multiple files, a cloud-based coding agent that can be assigned issues and open pull requests, and AI-assisted code review. Users can choose among several underlying models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
Individual developers, students and engineering teams of every size use it. The Free tier is limited to 2,000 completions and 50 premium requests per month; Pro ($10 per month) raises that to 300 premium requests and Pro+ ($39 per month) to 1,500. Business ($19 per user) and Enterprise ($39 per user) add organization policies, IP indemnity, audit logs and codebase-aware chat. Extra premium requests are billed at $0.04 each, so heavy agent use can push costs above the headline price. Copilot is free for verified students, teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects.
