Overview
Cursor is an AI-first code editor built as a fork of Visual Studio Code, so existing extensions, keybindings and themes carry over. Its core features are Tab, a multi-line autocomplete that predicts the next edit; a chat sidebar that indexes the whole codebase; and Agent mode, which plans changes across files, runs terminal commands and iterates on errors. Background agents run tasks remotely and open pull requests, and the Bugbot add-on reviews pull requests on GitHub. Users can pick among models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI, or an Auto mode that selects for them.
It is widely adopted by individual developers and startups, with Teams and Enterprise plans adding SSO, admin controls and an enforced privacy mode that prevents code from being retained.
The Hobby plan is free, needs no card and carries a limited number of Agent requests. Above it the plans are a usage ladder rather than a feature ladder: Pro at $20 a month, Pro+ at $60 for three times the Pro agent limits and Ultra at $200 for twenty times. Teams adds central billing, SSO, usage analytics and Bugbot code review at $40 per user a month, with a Premium tier at $120 for five times the Standard agent limits; Enterprise is quoted individually. Yearly billing saves 20 percent, and Bugbot is charged by usage on the individual plans. Heavy agent use exhausts an allowance faster than most people expect, so read the usage page before the ladder decides for you.

Cursor is the right editor if you want agentic coding to be how you work rather than a sidebar you occasionally open. The VS Code fork means extensions, keybindings and themes survive the move, and Tab and Agent mode are good enough that most people stop reaching for a separate chat window within a week.
Budget for the tier above the one you think you need. The plans are a usage ladder, not a feature ladder: $20 Pro, $60 Pro+ and $200 Ultra buy the same editor with progressively higher agent limits, so it is how much you delegate, not how many features you want, that sets the bill. If two weeks of heavy refactoring push you into the next tier, that is the tier you are actually on.
Look elsewhere if your team lives in JetBrains or a terminal editor, where GitHub Copilot covers far more surfaces, or if code cannot leave your network. Teams Standard at $40 per user a month is where privacy mode, SSO and Bugbot reviews stop being individual habits and become policy.
