Semrush
Editor’s pickAll-in-one SEO and marketing suite for keyword research, competitor analysis, audits and rank tracking.
Overview
Semrush is an all-in-one SEO and digital marketing suite covering keyword research, competitive analysis, site audits, backlink data, rank tracking, content tools and paid-search research. It is the broadest product in this category and priced accordingly.
Who it is for
Semrush is built for agencies running SEO and PPC for several clients, for in-house marketing teams that need competitor intelligence, and for content teams that want research and optimisation in one account. The economics work when one subscription replaces several, and when the research it enables is worth four figures a year.
It is poor value for a solo site owner on a tight budget, and overkill for anyone who only needs to watch a handful of rankings.
What it does well
Breadth, and it is not padding. The Keyword Magic Tool database is very large with strong filtering and clustering; Position Tracking supports daily updates by location and device; domain-level competitor reports cover both organic and paid activity. Add-on toolkits extend into social media, local SEO and agency reporting, and Semrush Academy is a substantial free training resource — which matters, because the interface is dense enough to need it.
Where it costs you
Price is the main objection and it has two parts. The headline is high: the entry SEO plan is about $139 per month, with Starter at about $199, Pro+ at about $299 and Advanced at about $549. The second part is that every plan includes one user seat, and most capabilities beyond the core are sold as separate add-on toolkits. A three-person agency is not paying the headline rate; it is paying that plus two seats plus whatever toolkits it needs.
There is a free account, but at around ten requests a day it is a sampler rather than a working tier.
How it compares
Ahrefs is the main rival, stronger on backlink data and narrower overall. Moz Pro is gentler and cheaper with less depth. SE Ranking used to be the budget alternative, but its entry plan is now within about ten dollars of Semrush's, so that comparison is about workflow and agency tooling rather than price.

Best for
A good fit if you are

- In-house marketing teams that need competitor intelligence
- Content teams that want research and optimization in one suite
Not ideal if you
- Solo site owners on a tight budget
- Teams that only need rank tracking
Verdict
Semrush earns its price for agencies and in-house teams that will use the breadth — SEO, PPC, content and competitor research in one account. Nothing else in this catalogue covers as much ground.
Do the seat arithmetic before signing. Every plan includes one user, most toolkits cost extra, and API access needs the Business tier, so the real bill for a team is well above the advertised one. If you mainly need rank tracking, or you are one person, SE Ranking or Moz Pro will serve you better.
Before you commit
Questions worth answering for your own situation. Nothing here is a fault of the product.
- Count seats: every plan includes one user, and extra seats are charged on top of the plan price
- List the toolkits you actually need — social, local and agency reporting are sold separately from the core plans
- If you need API access, note that it starts at the Business plan, not Pro or Guru
- Check the project and tracked-keyword caps on your tier against the number of clients or sites you run
- Annual billing is discounted by roughly 17 percent; decide before you start, since the trial period is short
