PostHog

Open-source product analytics with session replay, feature flags, experiments and surveys in one platform.

Overview

PostHog is an open-source product analytics platform that bundles event analytics, session replay, heatmaps, feature flags, A/B experiments, surveys, error tracking and a data warehouse in one product. Everything shares the same event data, so a team can go from a funnel drop-off to the recordings behind it or ship a flag-gated fix without leaving the tool. Engineering and product teams at startups and scale-ups are the core audience, and it is developer-oriented from the SDKs to the SQL-based HogQL query layer.

Pricing is usage-based with a large free allowance each month: roughly 1 million events, 5,000 session recordings and 1 million feature flag requests are free, and each product bills separately per unit beyond that with volume discounts. The free plan is limited to one project and one year of data retention; adding a card unlocks unlimited projects and longer retention while keeping the free allowance. A Teams add-on (approximately $450 per month) adds SSO, priority support and advanced permissions, and Enterprise pricing is custom.

US and EU cloud regions are available, and a Docker-based hobby deployment can be self-hosted, though PostHog recommends its cloud for anything beyond small volumes. The breadth brings a real learning curve, and costs need monitoring once traffic grows.
