Overview

Squarespace is a hosted website builder known for template quality and a visual editor, with commerce features included on every plan rather than sold as a separate tier.

Who it is for

Squarespace suits creatives, photographers and small brands where design quality is the point, service businesses selling appointments alongside a few products, and restaurants and local businesses that need a good site with light commerce. The common thread is that the website matters at least as much as the store.

It is the wrong platform for large catalogues, complex product and shipping logic, or stores that depend on many third-party integrations.

What it does well

The templates and the visual editor are a step above most builders, and the result looks designed rather than assembled. Commerce is included everywhere — physical products, services, digital downloads and memberships all sell from the same site, with inventory, discounts, gift cards and shipping rules included. Buying domains, Google Workspace email, scheduling through Acuity and email campaigns from one vendor keeps the admin simple, which is worth real money to a one-person business.

Where it costs you

Two things to check. First, the Basic plan charges a Squarespace transaction fee of approximately 2% on sales, which the Core and Advanced plans do not; on any meaningful sales volume, moving up a tier costs less than staying put. Second, month-to-month rates are well above annual: Basic is $12 per month billed annually against $19 monthly, Core $17 against $27 and Advanced $25 against $36.

Features are tiered in ways that matter to sellers: the deeper commerce features sit on Advanced, while Core is where transaction fees drop to zero and API integrations for advanced sales functionality begin. The app and extension ecosystem is far smaller than Shopify's or WordPress's, so unusual workflows can run out of room. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial.

How it compares

Shopify is the better platform once commerce is the main event rather than an addition. Wix is the closest builder competitor, with more flexibility and less design consistency.

Best for

A good fit if you are

  • Creatives, photographers and small brands that prioritize design
  • Service businesses selling appointments plus a small range of products
  • Restaurants and local businesses that need a site with light commerce

Not ideal if you

  • Large catalogs or complex product and shipping logic
  • Stores that depend on many third-party integrations

Verdict

Squarespace is the right choice when design leads and commerce follows — a portfolio, a service business, a restaurant, a small brand with a modest catalogue. Nothing else in this catalogue makes a good-looking site as quickly.

Do the transaction-fee arithmetic before picking Basic. At any real sales volume the approximately 2% fee costs more than upgrading to a tier that does not charge it. If the catalogue is large or the workflows unusual, this is the wrong platform, not the wrong tier.

Before you commit

Questions worth answering for your own situation. Nothing here is a fault of the product.

  • If you will sell more than a token amount, compare the Basic plan's approximately 2% transaction fee against the cost of upgrading to Plus
  • Check annual against monthly pricing — the monthly rate is roughly 40% higher on every tier
  • Confirm which tier holds what you need: abandoned cart recovery, subscriptions and the Commerce API are all on Advanced
  • List the third-party integrations you depend on, since the extension ecosystem is much smaller than Shopify's or WordPress's
  • There is no free plan; the trial is 14 days, so have your content ready before starting it
