Overview

WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin from Automattic that adds products, a cart, checkout, orders and coupons to a self-hosted WordPress site. Because it runs on your own hosting, you control the code, data and design, and it powers a very large share of the world's online stores, from small shops to content-heavy sites that sell alongside a blog.

The core plugin covers physical and digital products, inventory, tax and shipping settings, built-in analytics, CSV import and export, a REST API, webhooks and WP-CLI commands. WooPayments, the first-party gateway, adds card processing, multi-currency support and in-person payments through the Woo mobile app in supported countries. Official extensions such as Subscriptions, Bookings and AutomateWoo are sold separately as annual licenses, which WooCommerce prices in the range of $29 to $299 per year each.

There is no plan to buy, but the real cost is hosting, a theme, paid extensions and payment processing (WooPayments charges approximately 2.9% plus $0.30 per US domestic card transaction). Automattic's WordPress.com Commerce plan bundles managed hosting with WooCommerce for approximately $45 per month billed annually. Expect to handle updates, backups, security and plugin conflicts yourself or through a managed host, which is the main reason less technical sellers choose a hosted platform instead.
