Squarespace vs WooCommerce

This is not a like-for-like price comparison and any page that presents it as one is misleading you. Squarespace is a hosted product with a single monthly bill. WooCommerce is a free, open-source plugin, and the cost of running it is whatever you assemble — hosting, extensions and your own time. The real question is which of those two cost structures you are equipped to take on.

Which should you choose?

Choose Squarespace if

  • Creatives, photographers and small brands that prioritize design
  • Service businesses selling appointments plus a small range of products
  • Restaurants and local businesses that need a site with light commerce

Choose WooCommerce if

  • Existing WordPress sites that want to add a shop
  • Developers and agencies building customized stores
  • Sellers who want ownership of their data and code
  • Content-first businesses selling alongside a blog

Our verdict

Choose Squarespace if you want the bill to be the whole cost. Basic is $19 a month, Core $27 and Advanced $36, all billed monthly and around a third cheaper annually, with commerce included on every plan rather than gated behind a separate tier. Design quality is a genuine advantage, there is a 14-day trial, and nobody has to think about updates or backups. The Basic plan charges a transaction fee on sales, so if you are selling seriously, price Core. Choose WooCommerce if you already run WordPress or have someone who can maintain a site. The core plugin is free with no platform fee and no revenue share, but WooCommerce itself states that hosting runs $25 to $350 a month for most stores and official extensions cost $29 to $299 a year each. It is cheaper than Squarespace only if your hosting is modest and you need few paid extensions — and it is not cheaper at all if the time spent on plugin conflicts and performance tuning has a cost. VERILO rates WooCommerce 2 out of 5 for ease of use against Squarespace's 4, and that gap is the honest summary. WooCommerce gives you control and an enormous ecosystem in exchange for being responsible for hosting, updates, backups and security. If reading that sentence felt like a warning rather than an opportunity, Squarespace is your answer.
