Who this list is for
For anyone producing visuals — concepts, illustrations, social imagery — from a written description rather than a camera or a stock library. Editing photos you already have is a different job, and so is laying out a design around them.
How to choose
Decide whether image generation is the whole job or part of a wider one. Midjourney is a dedicated generator with a consistent house look and little prompt engineering needed; ChatGPT and Gemini generate images inside an assistant you may already pay for, which is often enough for a blog header or a quick concept.
Then look at control and privacy. Midjourney adds style and character references, upscaling and a web editor, but on its lower tiers generations are public by default. Runway is the one built for motion, generating video from text, image or video input with camera controls that suit prototyping a shot.
Know the limits before you plan a campaign around them. Text inside generated images is still unreliable across these tools, and credit-based pricing makes the cost of a usable result hard to predict when several attempts are normal.

- Look and consistency
- Every model has a default aesthetic. Run the same brief through two tools and judge which needs less coaxing to produce something you would actually publish.
- Direction and references
- Control separates a demo from a deliverable: style and character references, aspect ratios, in-painting and upscaling decide whether you can iterate on one idea or keep rolling dice.
- Rights and privacy
