ChatGPT vs Perplexity
ChatGPT is a general assistant that can search the web. Perplexity is a search product that answers in prose. The overlap is real — both reply to a question with a paragraph and some links — but the defaults point in opposite directions: ChatGPT optimises for getting the task done, Perplexity for showing where the answer came from.

Our verdict
Choose Perplexity when the answer has to be checkable. Every response carries numbered citations, and the habit that builds — opening a source before you rely on a claim — is why researchers, analysts and journalists keep it alongside something else. Deep Research and Perplexity Computer turn one prompt into a structured report or dashboard, and the Comet browser puts the same engine somewhere it can act on the page in front of you.
Choose ChatGPT when the job is wider than research. It handles images, voice, file analysis, code execution, custom assistants and agent mode, it has the largest ecosystem of guides, connectors and third-party integrations, and it is the one most teams already pay for. Its web search is competent; it is simply not the centre of gravity of the product.
In practice this is less either/or than a question of what a second subscription is for. If sourced research fills part of your week, Perplexity earns its own line on the invoice; if it comes up occasionally, ChatGPT's search will cover it and the money is better spent elsewhere. One difference at the point of purchase: Perplexity publishes its individual plans on annual billing, so the headline figure is a yearly commitment rather than a month-to-month rate. Check both vendors' own pages before signing — the tiers and the limits on each change often.
