Canva
Editor’s pickTemplate-driven online design tool for social graphics, presentations, video, documents and print.
Overview
Canva is a browser-based design tool built around templates: pick a layout for a social post, presentation, flyer, video or document, then swap in text, photos and brand elements. It is used by marketers, small businesses, educators and non-designers, and the company reported more than 200 million monthly users in 2025. Beyond graphics it now covers presentations, short video, whiteboards, print ordering and, since the 2025 Visual Suite update, spreadsheets (Canva Sheets) and simple interactive pages (Canva Code). Canva also owns the Affinity professional suite, which it made free in late 2025.
What stands out is the size of the template and stock library, the Magic Studio AI tools (text and image generation, Magic Resize, background removal) and one-click resizing across formats. Native apps exist for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and the Connect API supports automation.
The Free plan is usable indefinitely but withholds Brand Kit, Background Remover, premium stock and most Magic Studio capacity. Canva Pro costs $120 per year for one person and Canva Business — the plan previously called Canva Teams — is $210 per year per person; Enterprise is priced on contact. Canva publishes annual totals on its pricing page and does not show a monthly-billed rate. Precise vector illustration and typography remain weaker than in dedicated professional tools.

Best for
A good fit if you are
- Marketers and small businesses producing social and print graphics quickly
- Non-designers who need presentations, flyers and short videos
- Teams that want shared brand kits and approved templates
Not ideal if you
- Professional UI/UX design and developer handoff
- Detailed vector illustration or print-production work
Verdict
Canva is the right tool for almost everyone who is not a designer. The template library and Magic Studio tools mean a competent-looking social post, deck or flyer takes minutes, and the free plan stays useful indefinitely rather than expiring.
It stops being the right tool at the point where the output has to be precise. Vector illustration, typography and print production are where its limits show, and designs are tied to Canva's own format with limited editable vector export — which matters if the work must leave the platform.
Before you commit
Questions worth answering for your own situation. Nothing here is a fault of the product.
- Check whether you need Brand Kit, Background Remover or premium stock — those require Pro rather than the free plan
- Canva publishes annual totals only — price the plan you want in your own currency before committing
- If designs must be edited outside Canva later, test the export you need before standardising on it
- For print production or vector illustration, confirm the output meets your printer's requirements first
- The free plan is usable indefinitely, so trial the real work before paying for anything
