Overview
Supabase is an open-source backend-as-a-service built around a dedicated Postgres database for each project. Alongside the database it provides authentication (email, magic links, OAuth providers and SSO), file storage, realtime subscriptions, Deno-based Edge Functions and auto-generated REST and GraphQL APIs, all managed from a web dashboard with a SQL editor and an AI assistant. It is frequently positioned as a Firebase alternative for developers who prefer relational data and SQL.
Users range from solo developers and hackathon teams to startups running production apps, and it has become a common backend for AI applications thanks to the pgvector extension. Because everything is standard Postgres, data is portable and the whole stack can be self-hosted with Docker.
The Free plan allows two active projects with a 500 MB database, 1 GB of file storage and 50,000 monthly active users, but free projects are paused after a week of inactivity. Pro is $25 per month per organization with an 8 GB database, 100 GB of storage, daily backups and $10 of included compute credits; larger compute instances and add-ons such as point-in-time recovery are billed on top. Team is $599 per month and Enterprise is custom.
